Plan Your Academic Success
By participating in this workshop you are making a commitment to become a more successful student and improve your academic standing! So far you have completed eight sections on “What Can Impact Your Progress and Success?”, Academic Standing, Time Management, To-Do List, Study Skills, “Life Happens”, University Resources, and S.M.A.R.T. Goals. You have also saved these documents to your computer: "How Did I Get Here" and "To-Do List”, and printed “My Weekly Schedule”. Your final activity will be to create your Academic Success Plan (instructions are below). Review and consider the following strategies for improving your academic standing:
Retake courses:
If you retake a course in which you earned a D,F, or NC (no competency), your lowest grade is removed from your GPA computation. Although all grades will appear on your transcript, only the higher grade will be factored into your GPA.
Reduce your credit load:
If you enroll in fewer credits and concentrate your studying, you are likely to earn higher grades and improve both your completion rate and your GPA. If you normally take a full load of 12 credits, consider taking 6-8 credits while on academic alert or probation. It is better to complete courses successfully, rather than rushing to complete too many credits and not do your best.
Balance work and school:
If you work AND go to college, you need to plan your time carefully. Any extra time you had before going back to school will need to be reserved for studying. Social, community and family activities will need to be re-evaluated so school is your priority. Ask your family and friends to support your decision to attend college by respecting your new schedule and time constraints.
Reflect on Your Choices:
Spend time understanding both your past successes and mistakes. Determine what obstacles or challenges jeopardize your academic success and what choices you can make to overcome any barriers. As you continue your educational journey, what strategies can you use to be more successful? If you feel you are doing everything you can and are still not satisfied with your academic progress, talk to your advisor, your instructor, a counselor, or other student advocates.
